Flower_writing_novel_2003_b

Just found this today. The pink corkboard in the back had the whole novel on it. I took a bunch of blue lined school notebook paper and stapled and taped it together. Look at that crazy mural, that was my old studio. That was my old mural.

On June 1st I mailed 75,000 words to my editor. Whooppee. The photo is a collection of post-it notes stuck to a big piece of chip board. This is how I organize each chapter. I have post-it notes everywhere.

Thanks for all your support,

New Mug with an old school design for Cafe Press

BK_mug_old_school_shield_cafepress_Blog (45k image)

A few years ago I owned a store dedicated to BikiniKat and this is a copy of the first mug I designed.
It works especailly well in public. Just point BikiniKat in the direction of negative action and her shield will protect you.

You can order one now on BikiniKat's Cafe' Press Site.

Spring Sprang Sprong Spreng Sprung

It's the first day of spring. It's time to get out of the house and smell the fresh air. Little daisies have already arrived, they've taken over the grass in the park by my house; they look so enthusiastic about it, their yellow chins up and defiant to all the dogs that run right through them. Little daisies bouncing right back up, white petals reaching out in every direction ready for anything; a dog paw, an eager collector, the rising sun. Good things, bad things or no things, the daisies don't care, they have seen it all and no matter what happens they'll be back again in the spring.

Finish the book.

Last December I was at a dinner party, and it's usually that time of the year where I really start to feel the dread of going to any dinner party. It's almost New Year's and this is the time of the year where everyone checks in with each other and friend's you only meet at dinner parties will ask you the same question, well at least ask me the same question...how's the book?

To make a long story short I have been writing BikiniKat VS. The Super Ugly Beautifuls for a long time. I had never really written a story from beginning to end, aside from English papers, and writing a novel, well, at the time it didn't scare me because I was too ignorant to know what I was getting into.

But now, seven years later, it's not that I'm struggling to finish it, it's just that novels are hard, and in a world of talking pink cats and baton twirling ice cream cones, anything can happen. Anything. And so I look at the bookshelf behind me full of writing books, my education to the craft, and I know that all I have to do is...

"Finish the book."

Oh, that's my friend Jaina. We write together and compare notes and she is a very prolific writer who, as we determined one evening..."Writes books that blow your mind."

It was at this dinner party where she looked at me and said "Finish the book" in such a way that it stuck to my ribs. A few days later I filled my printer with paper and hit the print button; hole punched the pile and gave a copy, warts and all, to my friend Jean who was visiting for the holidays.

Jean hugged the binder and told me she would protect it with her life. I have really great friends. Since then I have printed more then ten copies and distributed them around the neighborhood. This simple act has made such a big difference that I think that I'm just about to...finish the book.

Finish what you started

BikiniKat VS. The Super Ugly Beautifuls didn't start from a passion for writing it started as a way for me to put ten million thoughts into one place. BikiniKat's true begining was as a doll I made for my old store called Scairy Hairy Toys, but as soon as I put her on the shelf she had a life of her own. Customers would tell me what her story was and I listened. I took notes and then quite gradually BikiniKat and all of the other characters creeped into my thoughts to such an extent that I swear, when I'm walking through Golden Gate Park, she watches me from behind the trees.

Since then I have devoted myself to finishing this story and now I'm almost at the end. Over the past years I have used three things to help me on my way.

People Power. Asking Power. Hunting Power.

A philosophy my frined Anne Maria has taught me.

Get help from people, ask the right questions and if all else fails go out and get what your need to know.

Here is a great People Power site for you if you are writing, Holly Lisle is very inspirational. I found her while searching for writing podcasts.
